Does American Express Company support Israel?

In an October 13, 2023 statement, Chairman and CEO Stephen J. Squeri announced the company would donate $1.5 million "to help meet the urgent needs in Israel," with the first $750,000 going to American Friends of Magen David Adom and further funds to other relief organizations; JLens records an additional $500,000 toward HIAS's Israel response. Squeri wrote: "Our hearts go out to all the victims... impacted by the incomprehensible terrorist attacks on Israel." This is corporate money.

Alongside its corporate donation, American Express said it was matching colleague contributions to all eligible nonprofit organizations as part of its response to the attacks in Israel. The matching funds are corporate; the underlying gifts are employees' own.

Announced the acquisition of Nipendo, an Israeli B2B payments-automation company founded in 2008 and headquartered in Netanya, for an undisclosed sum (estimated at $15–20 million), and built an Amex Israel unit around its R&D team. After integrating the technology, American Express closed the Israeli operation in July 2025, laying off its several dozen local employees.

Since 1995, American Express has licensed its brand in Israel to Isracard, the country's largest credit-card company (historically part of the Bank Hapoalim group), which holds the franchise to issue and service American Express cards for the Israeli market. The Israeli cards are issued by Isracard, not by American Express itself; the relationship is a continuing brand-licensing partnership.
