Background

Panera Bread has no restaurants in Israel and never has: its more than 2,000 bakery-cafés are all in the United States and Canada, and no Israeli franchise, licence or closure appears in any market list or in Israeli press. No donation, in-kind aid, statement, investment, contract, sponsorship or partnership supporting Israel has been documented for Panera Bread or Panera Brands, before or since October 2023, and the company has no political action committee. Panera was bought for $7.5 billion in 2017 by JAB Holding Company, the Luxembourg vehicle of Germany's Reimann family, which also holds Pret A Manger, Caribou Coffee, Einstein Bros. Bagels, Espresso House, Krispy Kreme, a stake in Keurig Dr Pepper and JDE Peet's. The Israel-adjacent record in that ownership chain belongs to the family and its foundation, not to Panera and not to JAB as a corporation, and the distinction matters. After a family-commissioned historian established that Albert Reimann senior and junior had been committed Nazi supporters who donated to the SS and used forced labourers at the JAB predecessor Joh. A. Benckiser, the family announced in December 2019 a €10 million donation for Holocaust survivors and former forced labourers, half of it — €5 million, paid €2m in 2020, €2m in 2021 and €1m in 2022 — to the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany; Joh. A. Benckiser B.V. separately committed €250 million over ten years to the Alfred Landecker Foundation for Holocaust remembrance and work against antisemitism. That foundation stated on 20 December 2023 that immediately after the 7 October attack it had donated to institutions in southern Israel helping families and Shoah survivors affected by the attack, and, in the same announcement, to Médecins Sans Frontières for Palestinian civilians in the West Bank; no amounts or recipient names were published. A separate claim circulating since 2026 — that Panera's founder Ron Shaich, who left the board in 2019, donated to Israeli organisations and to the IDF — surfaces only as an activist assertion in reporting on the boycott campaign against the Tatte bakery chain, with no organisation, amount, date or primary source behind it, and is not published here. Shaich is in any case not Panera, and Panera is not JAB.
