Background

Duracell left Procter & Gamble on February 29, 2016, when P&G completed the transfer of the battery business to Berkshire Hathaway in a share-exchange deal valued at roughly $4.7 billion (Berkshire gave up about $4.2 billion of P&G stock it held, and P&G capitalised the business with about $1.8 billion in cash before the swap). Since then Duracell has been a wholly owned Berkshire subsidiary, and this is the whole basis of the claims that circulate about the brand. The substantive Israel record belongs to the parent, not to Duracell: Berkshire Hathaway bought 80% of the Israeli metal-cutting group Iscar/IMC of Tefen for $4 billion in cash in 2006 — its first acquisition of a company based outside the United States — and the remaining 20% for $2.05 billion in 2013, and still owns it. Separately, and importantly for attribution, Warren Buffett's $5 million purchase of Israel Bonds in 2016, the bond-raising events he hosted, his $10 million gift to Rambam hospital in Haifa in 2013 and his public praise of Israel's economy were personal acts, not Berkshire corporate transactions. At the Duracell brand level this pass found no donation, in-kind battery shipment, sponsorship, statement or political contribution to Israeli military, government or relief causes at any date, and no Duracell entity, office or plant in Israel; Duracell's documented subsidiaries and its new global R&D centre are in Europe and the United States. Duracell does not appear on the BDS movement's official boycott target lists — the advocacy sites that list it do so purely because of Berkshire's Israeli holdings and Buffett's personal statements.
