Background

Subway has no restaurants in Israel and no documented corporate donations, statements, or programs supporting it. A local franchisee brought the chain to Israel in 1992 and grew it to more than twenty branches, all of which closed by 2004 following the franchisee's death. A 2009 return attempt — a new investor leased a first site in Herzliya Pituach and reportedly planned up to 130 stores — never took off and ended in a legal dispute with Subway International B.V., and a 2014 announcement that the chain was seeking new Israeli franchisees produced no stores either. Subway (Doctor's Associates Inc.) has been owned by the US private-equity firm Roark Capital since April 2024. Viral boycott lists circulating since 2023 include Subway without documentation of any corporate support for Israel, and the BDS movement does not list Subway as an official boycott target.
