Background

Two separate confusions drive the online claims about this brand pair, and both should be stated plainly. First, the detergent Ariel has nothing to do with the Israeli settlement of Ariel in the occupied West Bank: the settlement was founded in 1978, while P&G's Ariel detergent was launched across markets in 1967-1969, years earlier, and no source connects the product name to the town. An older version of the same confusion claimed the brand was named after Ariel Sharon and that its logo was a Star of David; Sharon was prime minister only from 2001 to 2006, long after the brand existed. Second, a video circulated after October 2023 asserting that Ariel washing powder supports the Israel Defence Forces; the fact-checking outlet Logically Facts rated it misleading, finding the Ariel logo had been added to unrelated footage. What is verifiable is commercial and sits with the parent, P&G: an Israeli subsidiary (P&G Israel M.D.O. Ltd.), retail distribution of Tide and Ariel through Diplomat, and the 'Israel House of Innovation' open-innovation hub opened in 2007 alongside an agreement with Israel's Office of the Chief Scientist. P&G made no corporate statement on the war after October 7, 2023, and no donation, sponsorship or political contribution by the Tide or Ariel brands to Israeli military, government or relief causes is documented. P&G's one documented brand-level Israeli philanthropy belongs to a sister brand, Pantene, and is not Tide's or Ariel's. Neither brand appears on the BDS movement's official boycott target lists.
