Background

Al-Futtaim Group is a privately held Emirati conglomerate founded in Dubai in 1930, owned by Abdulla Al Futtaim and led by his son Omar Al Futtaim, with more than 40,000 employees in over 20 markets. No recorded donations, investments, contracts or statements in support of Israel were found for the group, its subsidiaries or the Al-Futtaim family. It should not be confused with Majid Al Futtaim Holding: the two are separate companies run by different branches of the same family, which divided their businesses around 2000. Al-Futtaim's role in almost everything it sells is that of a distributor or franchisee in defined Arab and Asian territories — and none of those territories is Israel. The three brands most often raised are worth separating precisely. IKEA: Al-Futtaim runs IKEA stores in the UAE, Qatar, Oman and Egypt under a franchise from Inter IKEA Systems; IKEA Israel is a different franchisee entirely, sold in 2005 to a group headed by Matthew Bronfman (Bronfman-Fisher). Toyota: Al-Futtaim is Toyota's distributor in the UAE and several other markets, while Toyota vehicles in Israel are imported by Union Motors, an Israeli-owned company of the Horesh family, with no ownership or commercial link to Al-Futtaim. Marks & Spencer: Al-Futtaim is M&S's largest international franchise partner, with 80-plus stores across roughly ten markets in the Gulf, Levant, North Africa and Asia; M&S's former Israeli stores were operated by a separate local company majority-owned by the Blue Square group and closed around 2001 after sustained losses. Holding a Western brand's franchise in the Gulf is not evidence of supporting Israel: a franchisee licenses a brand for named countries and neither owns the brand nor controls what other licensees of it do. As a private company Al-Futtaim publishes no audited group accounts and files nothing with US regulators, so this record rests on brand-owner statements and press coverage rather than on filings.
