Beiersdorf's NIVEA brand circulates on viral boycott lists in both directions, but the documented history runs the opposite way from what those posts suggest. In September 2011 an Israeli blogger noticed that NIVEA's international website listed 'Palestine Territories' but not Israel; the Simon Wiesenthal Center wrote to chairman Thomas Quaas accusing the company of effectively endorsing a boycott. Beiersdorf said the omission was practical, not political — Israel, like Malta and Cyprus, had no local marketing organisation because Israeli sales were run from Greece, and the international list covered only about 80 of the 150-plus countries selling NIVEA — then restored Israel to the site and launched Hebrew and English Israeli pages that month. NIVEA is not on the BDS movement's official boycott targets.
