Background

Electra Consumer Products is the Israeli company at the centre of the Carrefour boycott story, and getting the chain of attribution right is the whole point. Carrefour S.A. of France owns no stores in Israel; it licensed its brand to Electra Consumer Products and its Yenot Bitan subsidiary in March 2022, and the Israeli company spent about NIS 250 million converting its supermarkets, opening 50 Carrefour-branded stores on a single day in May 2023. When Carrefour Israel channels announced free food parcels for Israeli soldiers in October 2023, that was the Israeli franchisee's network — the acting party was here, not in France. A third entity, Dubai's Majid Al Futtaim, held the entirely separate Carrefour franchise for the Gulf and has never had a store in Israel or any ownership link to Electra; the boycott campaign that followed damaged its business over somebody else's stores. Within the Israeli group, attribution also needs care in the other direction: the UN OHCHR database lists the parent Elco Ltd., Electra Group Ltd. and Electra Afikim Ltd., but not Electra Consumer Products itself, and the research group Who Profits reports settlement branches in the wider franchisee network — a claim we record as a lead rather than as evidence, since advocacy sources are never a sole source here.

Days after 7 October 2023, Carrefour Israel-branded channels announced free food parcels for Israeli soldiers — including an Instagram post of 10 October — and at least one Jerusalem branch ran an in-store donation drive for soldiers. These acts came from the stores of the Israeli franchisee, Electra Consumer Products and its Yenot Bitan subsidiary, not from the French parent, and they triggered a global boycott campaign against the Carrefour brand. Carrefour corporate later characterised the donations as individual initiatives by store staff that ended by mid-October 2023, with CEO Alexandre Bompard stating there is "no more donation, no more aid provided to the Israeli army." We have found no statement from Electra Consumer Products itself disowning the announcements.
