Background

Hyundai cars are imported and distributed in Israel by Colmobil, an independent, Israeli-owned importer that is not a Hyundai Motor subsidiary. Boycott campaigns and human-rights reporting about Hyundai excavators and bulldozers used in demolitions of Palestinian homes — documented by Amnesty International (2023, 2025) and the BDS movement — concern Hyundai Construction Equipment and HD Hyundai Infracore, units of HD Hyundai (formerly the Hyundai Heavy Industries Group). HD Hyundai has been corporately separate from Hyundai Motor Group since the Hyundai conglomerate broke up in the early 2000s: the two groups share a name and founding family but have no formal ties, and the equipment reaches Israel through HD Hyundai's independent local distributors (EFCO, Emcol). Viral posts often conflate the two. Hyundai Motor Company's own documented Israel ties are the car sales through that importer, the CRADLE Tel Aviv innovation center, its startup investments, and the partnerships listed above.

Hyundai-brand cars are sold in Israel through a local importer, and part of that supply stopped when Turkey suspended all trade with Israel on 2 May 2024. Calcalist reported on 18 July 2024 that the Hyundai Israel website had stopped accepting orders for the Bayon, i20 and i10 — the three Hyundai models marketed in Israel that are built at Hyundai's plant in Turkey — under a notice citing the Turkish government's decision. Importers' expectations that the cars could be routed through third countries, or that the manufacturers would build them elsewhere, were not met; Calcalist attributes that to European type-approval rules, plant production allocation and more than $1,000 in extra shipping per car while the Red Sea route is avoided, not to any decision about Israel. Hyundai had led the Israeli market for over a decade; in the first half of 2024 Toyota took first place with 17,347 deliveries against Hyundai's 17,259. This is a supply disruption caused by a Turkish government decision, not an act by Hyundai.
